Lanterman House

 

The Lanterman House is a historic house museum in La Caada Flintridge, California. It was built in 1915 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This historic home was once owned by the Lanterman family, which included prominent engineers and doctors. Today, the house is owned by the city of La Cañada Flintridge.

The Lanterman family lived in the home from 1915 to 1948. It was commissioned by Dr. Roy Lanterman, who was a doctor in Los Angeles. He hoped to build a concrete house that would be quake-proof. A few years later, he decided to move back to the rural La Cañada Valley with his wife, Emily.

There are 32 pairs of French doors, which provide natural light to all rooms. They also allow access to the interior patio.

There are many original finishes in the house, including hand-painted wall ornamentation. Also, the kitchen is equipped with new appliances and innovative work and storage spaces. The house has a small private parking lot.

The Lanterman House is a Passport2History museum, meaning that visitors can view the history of the area through a guidebook and the Lanterman family. An oral history is available, featuring interviews with local residents. In addition to the archive, there are rotating exhibitions about the history of the Crescenta-Cañada Valley. These include the Valley Sun newspaper archives, a historical photographs collection, and a legislative history of the region.

The Lanterman House is open for tours most Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and most Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. During the holidays, it is festively decorated.

For over two decades, the Lanterman House was a popular gathering place. It was the setting for political events, poetry readings, and social gatherings. Several members of the Lanterman family worked for the YMCA of the Foothills, St. George's Episcopal Church, and the La Cañada Trails Council. Other members of the family served on the LCHS PTSA, the LCHS Alumni Association, the La Cañada Unified School District, and the LCHS Educational Foundation.

As you walk through the house, you will notice how it has been restored. Previously, it had a large organ room. But today, the organ is at El Capitan.

The house has a garden, which serves as a reminder of turn-of-the-century Southern California living. Many of the plants are native. The gardens also contain drought-tolerant specimens.

Aside from being a historic site, the Lanterman House is also a great place to visit for children. It is located on a 1.4-acre property, which has been restored. The grounds include a small, private parking lot, and the gardens feature drought-tolerant plants and plant specimens.
